Medical architecture | Part i Architectural Assistant
Medical Architecture was established in 1991 following long involvement with the Medical Architecture Research Unit (MARU). The practice has two offices in London & Newcastle upon Tyne.
During my time at Medical Architecture I was given the opportunity to work on various projects of different scales, budgets and stages within the Newcastle office’s expertise of medical mental health projects. I gained experience across the RIBA Work Stages 0-6 on projects that ranged from £40,000 to £50m.
The main project that I worked on across the RIBA Work Stages 2-5 was a very rewarding process. I worked within a small team to progress the project from concept design through to construction, with my role being to produce drawings and information packages from Revit to submit for planning approval, tender, sustainable design accreditation (BREEAM) and construction. I am very proud to say that this project went on to win Best P21+ Project at Building Better Healthcare Awards 2013. I learnt fast, worked efficiently and effectively as part of many teams to meet deadlines. Experienced in BIM and checking projects for clash detection. Acquired valued knowledge within the office about sustainable design and took a leading role in organising and producing information to submit for BREEAM. I took on extra management roles by volunteering to be part of the practice’s CPD & Social Management Groups. I was enthusiastic to learn and overcome the challenges you meet when designing for such a specialised user group, mental health patients. Site experience at various stages for timber frame construction
